Shropshire Drives

With 23 years of professional experience, we are now one of the most recognised block paving companies in Shropshire. We cover the whole of the Shropshire County, including Shrewsbury, Telford, Whitchurch, Oswestry, Market Drayton, Bridgnorth, Ludlow and Shifnal.

Tarmac, Concrete or Block Paving

Sorry but we do not offer tarmac or imprinted concrete drives. The problem with tarmac and imprinted concrete is that unlike block paving, it is a solid surface with no expansion joints.

With the weight of vehicles driving on and off the drive, it is only a matter of time before sinkages and cracking occurs. This can only then be resolved by retarmacing or concreting the section affected and this is very noticeable. Tarmac and imprinted concrete are cheap short term solutions only.

We therefore now only recommend and install block paving because we want you to be 100% happy with the finished result and have a driveway that will stand the test of time.

Applications

If you are looking for a low maintenance drive then block paving is definitely the answer. A lot of people ask about a drive extension. If you want to increase / extend the size of your existing drive and the adjacent space is available then no problem. Around half of the block pave drives we install are actually extending the existing area to take over e.g. a lawn area. Block paving adds to the value of your house and with more people having 2 or 3 cars in the household, having a drive extension is actually more cost-effective.

Block paving is ideal for driveways but it is now starting to be used more in the garden areas for patios and garden paths. It is hard-wearing, maintenance free and cost effective.

Choosing your Materials

There are two types of block paving, the standard rectangular block which is available in one size and normally seen laid in a Herringbone pattern. Then there is the sett which is usually available in three different sizes and can be laid either in a Herringbone pattern or in parallel lines.

Both the rectangular blocks and the setts are made of concrete and are available in a variety of colours as seen below:

We can provide colour samples of the blocks and setts to give you chance to decide which colour would be right for your drive.

Manufacturers include Bradstone and Marshalls who both produce very good quality blocks and setts.

Seek a Professional Installation

Laying the block paving itself is the easiest part of the job. The difference between the professional companies and the cowboys is the work that is done before the blocks are laid.

We take the surface material on the existing drive down to a sufficient depth to allow a good bed of MOT hardcore to be laid and compacted. This provides a firm base and will prevent the blocks from sinking.

We then cover this with a second layer of much finer hardcore dust which again is compacted down. This then forms a concrete-like base on which a thin layer of sharp sand can be laid prior to laying the blocks.

We normally suggest a darker colour block paving around the perimeter of the drive, normally charcoal and these are laid on a full bed of mortar to prevent movement.

The inner block paving or setts are then laid in a pattern of your choice. We recommend the Herringbone pattern as this locks the blocks very well.

Finally we brush in kiln dried sand and compact the whole drive once more to prevent the blocks from moving.

Common Patterns

A correctly laid block pave drive will support the weight of any number of cars and even light commercial vehicles.

Please note we are a professional limited company. Unlike our competitors we do not cold-call. Most of our business is referral work from previous customers who are happy with the standard of our work and our high level of customer service. All of our work is guaranteed, we are a local company and offer the highest standard of service.

Maintenance

Block paving is popular because it lasts a lifetime and is maintenance free. If you see a new drive with grass and weeds growing between the blocks, then the groundwork has not been done correctly.

Once compacted it is not easy to remove any blocks on a block paving drive. However if for instance you have an oil spill on the drive, we can come out and replace the affected blocks for you and the drive will look as good as new. That would not be possible with tarmac or imprinted concrete.

Costs

We do not aim to be the cheapest because you get what you pay for. We take a little longer to ensure the job is done right the first time every time so that when we leave you have nothing to do.

We do aim to offer the best value for money in Shropshire. 'Professionally laid' block paving will normally increase the value of your property and is a sound investment for the future.

Additional Services: Security Posts & Bollards

We can now supply and install a range of driveway security posts and security bollards to safely secure your car, caravan or boat.
